Tourism is a social, cultural, and economic phenomenon.

It entails spending time away from home and/or a place of work in pursuit of business or recreation, relaxation, leisure, or both.
Â
Descriptions:
Tourism is the act and process of spending time away from home, going on trips (short or long), and traveling for pleasure or business; it is also viewed as
- The theory and practice of touring,
- The business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists
- The business of operating tours, and
- The commercial organization and operation of holidays and visits to places of interest.
Â
Definition:
Tourism may be defined as the movement of people from their usual environment/place of residence/place of work to another place for personal or business/professional purposes to return to their place of residence/work/usual environment within 24 hours to max 12 months (1 year).

The World Tourism Organization (WTO) specifically defined tourism as the practice of staying outside your usual environment for one year or less if it’s for leisure purposes or 24 hours or less if it’s for business purposes.

This means a man and/or woman would leave his/her usual environment (residence/work), and utilize a form of transportation to travel (journey) from one point (place/location) to another point (location/place) within the country (domestic tourism) or outside the country (international tourism) either for leisure or business or both for at least 24hrs or less (if business purpose) and not more than 24months in either case (some countries differ on this criteria; opting to settle for max 30 days, 90 days, 180 days at any one time visit).
